There’s nothing better than going on holiday and having no plans other than sitting in the sun and reading some books. It was my first time going on holiday with a Kindle so I was excited to put that to some good use too. Here’s the three books I read when I went away to the Greek Island of Crete, mostly read in front of the pool at the lovely Cook’s Club hotel!
Just For The Summer – Abby Jimenez
My first read was a beach-friendly American romance. Emma and Justin both believe they suffer from the same curse; whoever they date ends up breaking up with them only to find their soulmate straight after. Surely, if they date and then break up with each other, they’ll both find their soulmates, right? Jimenez added some darker family dynamics to make the novel more than a conventional rom-com, but it was still fairly predictable and could have done with cutting half of its incredibly flowery descriptions. An easy holiday read, but not the most exciting.
Five Years From Now – Paige Toon
Nell and Van meet in Cornwall when they’re five years old, and every five years reunite in a true love story for the ages. I was totally in the reading flow when starting this and got through it in 24 hours; and what a brilliant 24 hours it was! Toon’s novel was both uplifting and heartbreaking, I genuinely cried twice. The Cornish coast setting is utterly blissful and both the protagonists, and supporting characters such as Nell’s dad, were really well-rounded. I’d recommend Five Years From Now if you’re looking for a romance novel that will tug on your heart-strings.
What A Way To Go – Bella Mackie
I loved how fresh and inventive Bella Mackie’s debut novel, How To Kill Your Family was, and What A Way To Go is no different. About the untimely death of a wealthy family’s patriarch, the book alternatives between the perspectives of him (just dead, in a purgatory until he can remember how he died), his wife and a local true-crime blogging sleuth on the case. The concept was so original and I was totally gripped in her world of murder mystery and uber-rich. If you love TV series like The Perfect Couple and Succession, you’ll love this.
